LTO-10 ships at 30 TB native — a 66% jump over LTO-9's 18 TB per cartridge. The headline 75 TB compressed figure is real but uses the standard 2.5:1 ratio; for cold-archive IT and M&E teams, the number that matters for slot planning and library sizing is 30 TB. More capacity per slot means fewer cartridges, fewer slots, and a meaningfully lower cost-per-terabyte at scale.
A genuine redesign, not a refresh
The gain comes from a mechanically redesigned tilted servo head operating at sub-micron track pitch, packing 14,784 tracks across the same half-inch tape width that LTO-9 fit 8,960 into. Shingled writing — where each track slightly overlaps the previous pass — handles the tight pitch; tape has used this technique since the early LTO generations, long before spinning-disk SMR drew any controversy, and it carries no write-penalty on a sequential medium.
M&E workloads: size on native
If your archive holds finished H.264, HEVC, or any pre-compressed media, the 2.5:1 ratio does not apply — compressed video is already incompressible and writes at roughly native capacity. Plan every library slot at 30 TB usable, not 75 TB. The compressed throughput number (~1,000 MB/s) likewise only holds for compressible data; native sustained write speed is approximately 400 MB/s.
Migration and the cost case
LTO-10 drives maintain the standard two-generation read-back, so your existing LTO-9 media remains readable. Libraries that support LTO-10 drive modules can be upgraded incrementally rather than replaced outright, protecting prior infrastructure investment while moving the per-slot cost curve downward. Roadmap confidence
The LTO roadmap has been revised from its earlier 576 TB aspirational ceiling to approximately 365 TB native by the mid-2030s — LTO-11 targeting ~70 TB, LTO-12 ~120 TB, LTO-13 ~210 TB.
