Regulated retention is not an IT preference — it is a legal obligation with real penalties for failure. WORM (Write Once, Read Many) tape enforces immutability at the hardware level: a WORM cartridge is factory-keyed so the drive firmware rejects every overwrite or erasure command, full stop. That physical write-lock is what separates genuine immutability from a software policy that an administrator — or an attacker — can reverse.

Why Hardware Enforcement Matters

A WORM cartridge ejected from the drive and shelved offline has no network attack surface. Ransomware cannot reach it; a misconfigured retention policy cannot delete it. For organizations subject to regulations requiring non-overwritable, non-erasable records, that hardware guarantee is the foundation an audit trail has to stand on. NIST SP 800-88r2 frames tape WORM squarely on the "retain with integrity" side of the media-sanitization taxonomy — no accidental clear or purge command can touch it.

Durability: Read the Field Numbers, Not Just the Lab Spec

LTO carries a headline UBER figure derived from a calculation that assumes purely random, uncorrelated errors. Fleet data from large-scale deployments tells a more grounded story: operational reliability settles at roughly four nines per cartridge, because real errors cluster positionally rather than scatter randomly. For compliance-critical or irreplaceable content — broadcast masters, legal records, financial archives — pair WORM with a verified second copy or erasure coding to reach the 11-nines range. One copy is a start, not a strategy.

M&E Sizing Caveat

LTO-10 aramid cartridges hold 40 TB native. Hardware compression is real — but finished video, H.264, JPEG, and pre-compressed media yield approximately 1:1. Size your WORM archive against native capacity for media workflows.
