Packing an exabyte of flash into a single rack is a genuine engineering milestone. But at flash $/TB, that rack carries a price tag that cold archive and finished-media budgets simply cannot absorb. The storage tier map is becoming harder to argue with: AI training and high-IOPS workloads belong on flash; long-term archive, finished media, and off-site backups belong on tape — where the LTO Program reports LTO-9 delivers 45 TB compressed per cartridge today, with a roadmap reaching 1.4 PB per cartridge by Gen 14. As hot-tier density scales up, the cost gap versus tape doesn't narrow — it widens. That gap is exactly where LTO tape lives.

The Story

WEKA launched WEKApod 3 and NeuralMesh 6 in tandem, targeting high-performance AI and compute workloads. WEKApod 3 is a turnkey, all-flash appliance that crosses the single-rack exabyte threshold — one rack, one usable exabyte of NVMe flash. NeuralMesh 6 adds native multi-tenancy to the underlying software-defined platform, making it easier to share the infrastructure across teams and workloads. The combined system is aimed squarely at latency-sensitive AI training and inference environments, not cold storage or archive.
