When a flash vendor needs a headline number, it reaches for "exabyte" — but exabytes on NVMe come with a power bill and a capital cost that no archive or M&E team can sustain at scale. Tape has been shipping exabyte-class capacity in production for years: over 150 exabytes compressed moved in a single calendar year across the LTO ecosystem alone. A 3U LTO-10 library like the M3640 delivers 25.6 PB native — 64 PB compressed — for under $78K, draws effectively zero power at rest, and keeps data air-gapped by design. Flash density is impressive engineering; it just isn't an archive economics story.
The Story
WEKA announced two linked products on July 21: NeuralMesh 6, a major software release adding native multi-tenancy to its parallel file system, and WEKApod 3, a purpose-built appliance family that ships with NeuralMesh pre-loaded. The headline claim is that the WEKApod 3 line can reach one exabyte of capacity within a single rack — a high-density, all-flash/NVMe pitch aimed at AI and enterprise workloads. NeuralMesh 6 remains available on customer-selected hardware independently of the appliance.
