MagStor LTO-9 18TB AIR Thunderbolt / USB4 Desktop Tape Drive
AIR Series Desktop Tape Drive
LTO-9 Thunderbolt / USB4 Desktop Tape Drive
The MagStor TRB5-HL9-AIR combines enterprise LTO-9 tape technology with modern Thunderbolt™ / USB4 connectivity in an airflow-optimized aluminum desktop enclosure. Designed for backup, archive, ransomware protection, and long-term data preservation, it delivers enterprise-class reliability with the simplicity of direct-attached storage.
Built on MagStor’s patented Thunderbolt LTO technology, the AIR Series features improved cooling, a SAS 8644 expansion port for future growth, removable offline media, and lifetime technical support from LTO storage experts.
Why Organizations Continue to Choose LTO
For more than 25 years, LTO (Linear Tape-Open) technology has been trusted by enterprises, government agencies, media organizations, healthcare providers, research institutions, and cloud providers to protect some of the world's most valuable data.
Today, LTO remains the industry standard for removable enterprise storage, combining massive capacity, enterprise-class performance, long media life, and true offline protection against ransomware, accidental deletion, and cyber threats.
For organizations storing large volumes of infrequently accessed data, LTO is widely recognized as one of the lowest long-term cost-per-terabyte storage technologies available. Unlike subscription-based cloud storage, LTO provides physical ownership of your data with no recurring capacity charges, giving organizations complete control over their archive.

Some vendors limit firmware updates or support resources to customers with active paid support contracts. MagStor helps customers maintain their systems with firmware guidance, diagnostics, upgrade services, and practical lifecycle support.
Real Out-of-Warranty Options
When an out-of-warranty LTO system fails, the answer should not automatically be “buy a new one.” MagStor offers repair, replacement, upgrade, and diagnostic paths where available.
Upgrade & Expansion Services
As storage needs change, MagStor can help with drive upgrades, interface upgrades, firmware updates, service evaluations, and migration planning.

System Requirements
Designed for modern Windows and macOS systems equipped with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5, or USB4. Review the minimum requirements below before installation.
Computer Interface Requirements
USB-C describes the connector shape—not the interface. Your computer must support Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5, USB4, or USB4 v2 through its USB-C port.
Supported
✓Thunderbolt 3
✓Thunderbolt 4
✓Thunderbolt 5
✓USB4
✓USB4 v2
Not Supported
✕USB 2.0
✕USB 3.0
✕USB 3.1
✕USB 3.2
✕Charging-only USB-C ports
The drive includes one 2-meter active Thunderbolt cable. If replacing the included cable, use a certified Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or Thunderbolt 5 cable for optimal performance and reliable device detection. While the connector is USB-C, not all USB-C cables support Thunderbolt or high-speed USB4 operation.
Additional Requirements
Sustained Source Performance
170 MB/s+
For reliable LTO-9 streaming, the computer or storage source should be able to maintain at least 170 MB/s sustained transfer performance, not just short burst speeds.
Typical bottlenecks include:
- 1GbE network storage: typically tops out around 100-120 MB/s and is usually too slow for LTO-9 streaming.
- Single USB hard drives: many USB HDDs cannot sustain high enough real-world write/read speeds across long backup jobs.
- Slow or fragmented source storage: can cause the tape drive to start and stop, reducing performance and increasing wear.
For best results, use fast local SSD storage, RAID storage, or 10GbE-or-faster network storage capable of sustained throughput.
Backup or Archive Software
Software Required
LTO tape drives require compatible backup, archive, or LTFS software to operate the drive, write data, restore files, and manage tape workflows. Software is sold separately unless otherwise specified. Examples include LTFS, Hedge Canister, Archiware P5, YoYotta, Veeam, Retrospect, and other software that supports standalone IBM LTO tape drives.
Operating Humidity
20%–50% RH
Maintain a practical operating target of 20%–50% relative humidity whenever possible. Avoid condensation at all times, as moisture can damage tape media and precision drive components. Use a clean, climate-controlled environment and avoid rapid environmental changes, dust, and blocked ventilation.
Humidity note: The 20%–50% RH range is practical operating guidance, not a substitute for the published specifications for the specific drive mechanism and media. Operating and storage limits can vary by LTO drive generation, drive mechanism, cartridge, and enclosure. Always follow the environmental specifications supplied with the drive and media. For humid locations, use air conditioning, dehumidification, and sealed media storage cases when appropriate.
TAA Compliance
Government, education, and regulated procurement environments may require equipment that complies with the U.S. Trade Agreements Act (TAA). MagStor offers TAA-compliant configurations using IBM LTO tape drive mechanisms manufactured in Japan.
Visual Identification
Blue Eject Button
Indicates a Japanese-manufactured IBM LTO drive mechanism. This is the TAA-compliant configuration for applicable MagStor LTO drive products.
Black Eject Button
Indicates a Chinese-manufactured IBM LTO drive mechanism. This configuration is not TAA compliant.
Note: The eject button color provides a quick visual indication of the internal LTO drive mechanism's manufacturing origin. Customers requiring TAA compliance should confirm the correct Japanese-manufactured configuration before ordering.
