Cold archive decisions usually get made on the storage-fee line of a cloud invoice. The problem is that the 10-year bill is built from several other lines that don't appear until you move your data.
The Cost the Monthly Invoice Doesn't Show
Retrieval pricing is where cloud cold archive math breaks down at scale. Pulling 1 PB from a cloud cold tier costs the equivalent of 13.8 months of storage fees — egress is not an edge case, it is a structural lock-in mechanism. Periodic integrity verification runs against active storage too, compounding the monthly rate with each pass. The risk is not theoretical: a 2019 migration event permanently destroyed an estimated 50 million songs from 14 million artists, and the 2019 collapse of a major cloud media locker affected 30 million users — losses that cloud durability guarantees, which explicitly exclude human error and vendor business decisions, do not cover.
What Tape Actually Costs Over a Decade
LTO-10 ships at 30 TB and 40 TB native per cartridge. Tape draws power only during active reads and writes; cartridges at rest consume zero watts — a meaningful gap against data-center infrastructure running 24/7. For M&E archives, hardware compression yields roughly 1:1 on finished H.264, HEVC, or ProRes files, so native capacity is the correct sizing number. The 40 TB aramid-substrate cartridge also widens the recommended operating temperature range, reducing HVAC load in the tape room — a TCO benefit that never appears in a $/TB comparison.
The Durability Caveat — and the Fix
LTO-9/10's "17 nines" figure is a calculated value under random, uncorrelated error assumptions — not a measured field result. Fleet data from large-scale deployments places operational reliability closer to 4 nines per cartridge, because real errors cluster positionally rather than distributing randomly. That is honest, and it matters: a verified second copy brings most archive tiers to a sufficient protection level. Irreplaceable masters warrant two-dimensional erasure coding, which reaches 11+ nines at roughly 45% overhead — far more efficient than maintaining four physical copies.
