MagStor, along with other member organizations of the Tape Storage Council (TSC), has issued the 2023 edition of the TSC Market Outlook report. This 11-year-old organization is a collaborative industry group that shares and promotes current trends, usages, and technology innovations occurring within the tape industry.
The new TSC Market Outlook report covers a number of trends, including sustainability, security and data accessibility. The report reveals 148.3 Exabytes (EB) of total tape capacity (compressed) shipped in 2022. This result was driven by continued hyperscaler and enterprise investment in LTO technology.
The report says magnetic tape is currently the most economical and environmentally friendly storage solution available. Data storage on more costly to operate HDDs (hard disk drives), which require constant power and cooling to maintain reliable operations, is not as efficient as tape storage.
Key storage trends also highlighted include:
- Security. Tape’s inherent air gap provides additional levels of cybercrime defense.
- Cloud Repatriation Using On-Premises S3 Compatible Tape Systems. Cloud storage repatriation describes a shift away from the cloud and back to an on-prem storage infrastructure.
- Reliability. LTO-9 Provides the Highest Storage Device Reliability, with Media Life Reaching 50 Years.
- Tape Reduces Carbon Emissions and eWaste. Recent studies show moving low-activity HDD storage to Magnetic tape reduced carbon emissions by 58% and electronic waste was reduced by 53%
